Beaches, towns and villages on Koh Lanta

Saladan town

Saladan has a very Thai feel, originally built over the waterfront with piers for the fisherman’s longtail boats. Many of the homes double up as family run restaurants or shops, and a community of fisherman still live here. Saladan is where most ferries arrive and the car ferry also crosses here.

Accommodation is scarce here but some nice places can be found. The ferries make it a central point of the island and a wide variety of shops, restaurants, dive schools, travel agents can be found here, as well as a Sunday market.

Kawkwang Beach

Kawkwang is the closest beach to Saladan at the northern tip of Koh Lanta. It is a quiet, often deserted beach that has magnificent views of the surrounding islands. At low tide you can even walk out onto a small island, barely separated from Lanta.

Klong Dao Beach

Klong Dao is the first beach most people visiting Koh Lanta by road will see. Close to all amenities in Saladan this 3km beach is popular with families as the water is shallow and clear, making it extremely safe to swim and paddle. There is a huge variety of entertainment facilities in this area.
Klong Dao has a wide selection of budget to high end accommodation.

Long Beach (Prae Ae)

Just south of Klong Dao and equally as popular is the stunning long beach. An impressive 4km long, Long Beach is so beautiful it will take your breath away. Long beach has a steeper incline to sea, getting deeper far more quickly than Klong Dao. At both ends of the beach, around the rocks, is some reasonable snorkelling, although no way near as impressive as the many dive and snorkel sites nearby. The resorts and facilities are more spread out here but offer good accommodation and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Prae Ae village is located at the southern tip of long beach and has a vibrant local community, spread around the beach and the main road.

Klong Khong Beach

Klong Khong has a good selection of different resorts famous for their picturesque sunsets and laid back local attitude. At low tide the beach becomes a little rocky, but offers some good snorkelling. As a result the room prices are generally a little cheaper than equivalents on the northern beaches and many resorts are small and family owned.

Klong Nin beach

With a similar atmosphere to Klong Khong, this 2km beach boasts golden sand with emerald green waters. The waves here are good for body boarding, especially during the low season (June – October). Walk into the sea and look back to admire the tropical rain forest covering the green mountains. The best thing to do on this beach is simply lay down and relax, either on the beach or in one of the many beach bars and restaurants.

Resorts offering bungalows are scattered up and down the beach, ranging from simple, inexpensive family accommodation to more upscale pool and spa resorts.

Klong Hin beach

A small beach next to Klong Nin that is very secluded with plenty of shade. Only a handful of resorts are situated here.

Kantiang bay

Surrounded by the high mountains of Koh Lanta’s national park, Kantiang bay is a famous stretch of stunning white sand with clear waters, excellent for swimming. Just 1 km long, this small beach is covered with tropical trees enhancing that desert island feeling. More upmarket accommodation is found here with some very high class resorts.

Klong Jark

Slightly curved and around 500 metres long, it is extremely quiet with only a handful of basic resorts in the area, otherwise known as waterfall beach. Still quite secluded, with good shaded areas to get away from the sun. It offers solitude and tranquillity for those who seek it. It's only 3km to the waterfall which has food and drink facilities on the road nearby.

Nui Beach

Another curved shaped beach with powder white sand. Just south of Kantiang bay, Nui beach is a quiet and tranquil getaway. The sea laps gently onto the shore as the bay is protected by the headlands each side. The tide is shallow which allows for safe swimming.

Bamboo Bay

This beach is surrounded with a backdrop of the green mountainside from the national park. Bamboo Bay is the second furthest beach south, with only the aptly named Last beach, before the national park and lighthouse. Safe for swimming and good for snorkelling, an abundance of species enjoy the shelter of the national marine park.

Lanta Old Town

Located on the Koh Lanta’s east coast, Old Town is the traditional Thai centre of Koh Lanta. The islands only hospital is situated here, as well as the main police station. Several restaurants, bars and shops here cater for tourists although follow the Thai’s for really authentic tastes.
A couple of places offer accommodation but tourism doesn’t play a large role here.

For traditional Thai holidays and celebrations, Old Town is the place to go.
